Type Locality and Naming
The reference section is located near Bengbai, Youzha Township 23 km southeast of Gongjue (Gonjo) County, Tibet. This formation was originally named by Li Po as the Gongjue (Gonjo) red bed in 1955.

Lithology and Thickness
Association of red, purplish red and variegated salt-bearing clastic rocks—conglomerate, muddy conglomerate, sandstone, sandy conglomerate and mudstone, locally intercalated with volcanic rocks. Laterally, from south to north the thickness increases and the formation without intercalations of volcanic rocks grades to the formation intercalated with volcanic rocks. The thickness ranges from 719 to 3335 m. The formation contains gypsum, halite and potash salts. Below the fossil bed there is a nearly 1000 m thick bed of sandy conglomerate, no fossil being found.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Its base unconformably overlies the Carboniferous Aoqu Fm (Carb. column 34; Markam)
Upper contact
The top is not defined. Regionally, in Markam area, the next younger unit is the Lawula Fm.
Regional extent
This formation is distributed in down-faulted basins along a fault zone in Jomda, Qamdo, Gonjo and Markam in Qamdo Prefecture.
