Gongjue Gr

Gongjue Gr

Period:
Paleogene

Age Interval:
Middle Eocene to late Middle Oligocene, (8b)

Province:
Xizang (Tibet)

Type Locality and Naming

The reference section is located near Bengbai, Youzha Township 23 km southeast of Gongjue (Gonjo) County, Tibet. This formation was originally named by Li Po as the Gongjue (Gonjo) red bed in 1955.

Synonym: Gonjo Fm; Gongjue Fm

Lithology and Thickness

Association of red, purplish red and variegated salt-bearing clastic rocks—conglomerate, muddy conglomerate, sandstone, sandy conglomerate and mudstone, locally intercalated with volcanic rocks. Laterally, from south to north the thickness increases and the formation without intercalations of volcanic rocks grades to the formation intercalated with volcanic rocks. The thickness ranges from 719 to 3335 m. The formation contains gypsum, halite and potash salts. Below the fossil bed there is a nearly 1000 m thick bed of sandy conglomerate, no fossil being found.

Lithology Pattern:
Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base unconformably overlies the Carboniferous Aoqu Fm (Carb. column 34; Markam)

Upper contact

The top is not defined. Regionally, in Markam area, the next younger unit is the Lawula Fm.

Regional extent

This formation is distributed in down-faulted basins along a fault zone in Jomda, Qamdo, Gonjo and Markam in Qamdo Prefecture.

GeoJSON

null

Fossils

It contains the insects Mesosagrites and Eocolus, the plants Sabalites and sporopollen.

Age

Zircons from intercalations of volcanic rocks on the west side of the Caoqu Gully, Jomda, yield U-Pb concordia ages of 15–39 Ma (reference values). [For graphic purposes here, put as Middle and Late Eocene; but probably highly variable among the various down-faulted basins.]
